Fuel Prices Surge in Second Pricing Window: Consumers Face Higher Costs

On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, a few companies that sell fuel increased their prices. This was the second time they did this in April.

Citi News checked different fuel stations and found that the prices had gone up a lot. For example, Goil, which is owned by the government, raised the price of petrol from GHc14.15 to GHc14.99 per litre. Diesel also went up from GHc14.74 to GHc14.80 per litre.

Similarly, Total Energies is now selling petrol at GHc14.30 per litre and diesel at GHc14.80 per litre.

Citi Business News found out that most of the companies are following the prices set by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). The NPA decided to set these prices for the companies that sell fuel as part of the rules they made for the fuel industry.

At first, the NPA wanted to start these new prices in the first week of April. But they changed their mind and decided to wait until the second week of April. This was because some groups, like the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), said they didn’t think the new prices would help consumers.

According to some papers Citi Business News got, the NPA says petrol should not be sold for less than GHc13.02 per litre and diesel should not be sold for less than GHc13.07 per litre. The price for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) should be at least GHc10.52 per litre. These new prices started on April 16 and will last until April 30, 2024.

The companies that sell fuel and LPG have to follow these prices set by the NPA. They can’t sell their products for less than these prices.
