Asanko Gold Enhances Healthcare Access for 1,500 Individuals

Written by LynkUPP

Asanko Gold Ghana Limited has taken a significant step towards promoting healthcare accessibility by enrolling over 1,500 individuals in the free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) during the first quarter of this year. Dr. Daniel Osei Twumasi, the Manager for Environment and Sustainability at the mining firm, highlighted the company’s commitment to providing free healthcare access, particularly for those in underserved mining communities.

This initiative was underscored during a ceremony held in Nkeniago, Amansie South District, where Asanko Gold organized a free health screening and donated essential medical supplies to the Amansie South District Hospital. The event coincided with World Malaria Day, observed on April 25, 2024, under the theme “Health Equity: The Cornerstone for Achieving Malaria Elimination.”

The NHIS personnel played a pivotal role during the event, issuing instant health insurance cards to beneficiaries, especially the elderly, in Keniego and neighboring communities. Additionally, Asanko Gold distributed free mosquito nets to attendees in collaboration with the German International Development Cooperation (GIZ), aiming to mitigate malaria cases prevalent in mining areas.

Dr. Ofosu Kobby Nasas, the Health Director of Amansie South District, emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent malaria infections. He urged residents to uphold cleanliness in their surroundings, cautioning against the hazards posed by untidy environments.

Dr. Nasas also raised concerns about the potential spread of malaria due to numerous uncovered pits left by illegal mining activities. These abandoned ‘galamsey’ pits serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, highlighting the urgent need for proper land reclamation post-mining activities.

While there have been no reported malaria-related deaths in the past four years, the Health Director advised residents to prioritize preventive measures such as sleeping under mosquito nets and practicing good environmental hygiene to contribute to malaria eradication efforts.
