Federal Government Pledges to Train and Certify 10 Million Artisans for Job Opportunities

Written by Dan

The Federal Government, together with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), has launched a new program called Skill-Up Artisans (SUPA). This initiative aims to train, certify, and empower 10 million artisans in Nigeria within two years. Led by Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, SUPA focuses on improving skills and creating job opportunities for artisans across the country.

The SUPA program is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled labor, both locally and internationally. With advancements in technology, there’s a shift towards valuing skilled workers, not just those in office jobs. Through tech-enabled training, certification, and access to necessary tools, SUPA aims to elevate artisans’ skills to industry standards, enabling them to thrive in various sectors.

Why Skilled Artisans are Important:

Nigeria’s population is huge, with over 220 million people, and unemployment is a big issue. By 2022, experts predict that there will be more than 67 million people in the workforce. This means there’s a need for more job opportunities, and training artisans is one way to create them.

Skilled artisans, who are good at making things by hand, can contribute a lot to the country’s economy. The better skilled they are, the more they can help the economy grow. According to Dr. Anite, the SUPA program will tackle the shortage of certified artisans by helping them get certified and licensed.

Government’s Objectives for the Program:

Dr. Anite explained that the SUPA program will help the government:

  1. Identify and categorize artisans in different sectors of the economy.
  2. Provide comprehensive training programs, including health and safety training, for trades like carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and electrical work.
  3. Equip artisans with essential tools, equipment, and funds to expand their businesses.
  4. Certify and license artisans to operate using standardized methods and practices.
  5. Increase job opportunities for artisans in both local and international markets.

Application Process:

People who are not artisans themselves can still help by sharing the registration link with artisans in their communities. This way, more artisans can benefit from the program and improve their skills, leading to better job opportunities and economic growth for Nigeria as a whole.

Final Thought

In conclusion, the SUPA program is a step towards empowering artisans and boosting Nigeria’s economy. By training and certifying 10 million artisans, the government aims to create more job opportunities, improve service quality, and reduce dependency on imported labor. This initiative not only benefits individual artisans but also contributes to overall economic development and prosperity nationwide.
